Hemp, (Cannabis sativa), also known as industrial hemp, is a plant of the family Cannabaceae.
Despite there being over 100 discovered cannabinoids, only a handful have been heavily studied and their potential verified.
Cannabis plants can vary in size; some are full and bushy, while others can grow 10-15 ft. tall.
Genetic differences in the plant cause the variances in CBD, THC, and even the strength of the stalk fibers.
There are two types of cannabinoids found in nature: endocannabinoids that are produced by the body and phytocannabinoids, which are found in cannabis plants.
The use of cannabis has been recorded for thousands of years.  It was used by the ancient Greeks, the Arabs from the 7th - 15th centuries, then spread across North Africa.  Cannabis is not only one of the oldest known drugs, but also one of the most widely used.
According to some historians, the first drafts of the Declaration of Independence were written on hemp paper, and Betsy Ross made the first US Flag out of hemp fabric.
For hundreds of years in America, hemp was considered legal tender that could be used as a form of payment.  There were even certain periods of time where you could be jailed for NOT growing cannabis.
President Barack Obama signed into law the Agricultural Act of 2014 which defined industrial hemp as distinct from marijuana.  Institutions of higher education or state departments of agriculture were authorized to regulate and conduct research and pilot programs.
To regulate the psychoactive properties of cannabis, in 1937 the U.S. government passed the Marijuana Tax Act.  There were many types of propaganda used to depict marijuana users as evil, and attempts made to get rid of the plant.

Because of hemp’s close relationship to marijuana, and the lack of knowledge on the differences between them, laws were put into effect restricting or prohibiting all cannabis growth. Throughout the 20th century, individual states and the federal government began to criminalize all cannabis.
The 2018 Farm Bill signed by President Donald Trump officially removed hemp from the Controlled Substances Act.
In June 25, 2018, the FDA approved Epidiolex, an almost pure pharmaceutical CBD formulation, as a treatment for two severe pediatric seizure disorders, Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome.
